HIGH VOLTAGE ELECTRICIAN at Fort Riley

JOB SUMMARY:

Civilian employees serve a vital role in supporting the Army mission.  They provide the skills that are not readily available in the military, but crucial to support military operations.  The Army integrates the talents and skills of its military and civilian members to form a Total Army.

    • Installs, replaces, and/or repairs poles, cross-arms, transformer racks and hangers, insulators, breakers, fuses, primary and secondary conductors, transformers, brackets and braces, guy wires or anchors, switch-gear, meters and a variety of other pole fixtures and hardware.

    • Installs underground cable and conduit, runs overhead wire and conduit and attaches to cross-arms and makes electrical connection by splicing and/or other method.

    • Installs home and industrial services by running wires form pole to entrance weather-head.

    • Installs street lighting circuits, lamps and related hardware.

    • Uses a variety of test instruments to run load tests on transformers, check and correct circuit malfunctions, etc.

    • Operates standby generator equipment, truck with winch and power takeoff, posthole digger, aerial boom, and related equipment.

    Screen Out Element: 

    • Ability to perform the duties of a high voltage electrician without more than normal supervision.

     

    Physical Effort: 

    • Moderately heavy physical effort is exerted as incumbent works aloft on poles, at ground level, and in ground trenches, or manholes.

    • Work requires bending, stooping, climbing, and standing for long periods.

    • Coordination of eyes, hands, legs, and body is needed in installing, repairing, and testing electrical equipment in confined spaces such as manholes and overhead structures.

    • Light physical effort is used in reaching, bending, turning, or moving hands, arms, feet, and legs to operate hand and foot controls.

    • Moderate physical effort is required in the handling of objects weighing up to 20 pounds and the occasional handling of objects weighing over 50 pounds.

     

    Working Conditions: 

    • Works outside most of the time, is subject to extreme weather conditions during and after normal hours, and in close proximity to high voltage line, equipment and multiple substations.

    • Work requires extensive pole climbing with some work in underground facilities.

    • Subject to injury from contact with high voltage lines.

    • Subject to injury from falling from poles.

    • Drives in all types of traffic and weather and is exposed to the possibility of serious accidents.

    • Subject to cuts, bruises, and broken bones as a result of accidents while driving or while loading and unloading vehicles.

    Male applicants born after December 31, 1959 must complete a Pre-Employment Certification Statement for Selective Service Registration.

    One year trial/probationary period may be required.

    Direct Deposit of Pay is Required.
