Nursing Supervisor at Kansas

Job Description

Position Title: Nursing Supervisor
Reports to: VP of Nursing & Clinical Services
Supervises: Nursing staff
FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

I.Minimum Requirements:

Education:Associates degree in nursing required, BSN preferred

Licensure/Certification:Licensed as a Registered Nurse in the State of Kansas. ANCC certification as a psychiatric nurse preferred.

Experience:At least 2 years of prior experience or training in psychiatric nursing or ANCC certification in psychiatric nursing required. Prior supervisory experience preferred.

IV.Position Summary:

To serve as liaison between VP of Nursing and Clinical Services and nursing and clinical staff. To provide proficient, age, specific, developmentally and specialty appropriate nursing care by applying clinical nursing knowledge and skill, and for ensuring the comfort and safety of patients/families in accordance with legal, hospital, practice and policies and procedures, established standards of nursing care and practice, as defined by the Kansas State Board of Nursing, the State of Kansas and KVC Behavioral Healthcare Network.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

CLINICAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

Assesses patients requesting admission to acute inpatient care by completing a comprehensive admission assessment to determine if criteria is met for inpatient
Notifies the attending physician of necessity for admission
Requests screening of patients with Medicaid
Appropriates necessary transfer of patients whose needs can not be met by KVC Psychiatric Hospital, in accordance with EMTALA/COBRA laws
Assures that all consents are signed by the legal guardian at the time of admission
Assures the safety of the patient during the admission process
Maintains accurate and complete documentation of nursing care. Observes and reports significant patient symptoms to the attending physician, and/or VP Nursing & Clinical Services.
Competes a nursing assessment within 8 hours of admission
Completes admission lab work within 24 hours of admission
Assists the attending physician in educating patients and guardians about medication effects and side effects
Assists in providing accurate information regarding patient progress to the Treatment Team
Participates in the overall decision-making process of the treatment team for quality patient care
Maintains orderliness and adequacy of medical supplies and medications
Reviews and transcribes physicians orders on appropriate forms

Responsible for the administration and documentation of prescribed medications and treatments within the scope of practice
Draws blood and performs other lab procedures on patients
Documents any nursing interventions provided to patients in daily progress notes
Completes nursing discharge/aftercare summary at the time of discharge. Makes sure that the guardian is given a copy of the summary
Supervises all special treatment procedures delivered to patients
Supervises and obtains physician order for seclusion/restraints
Supervises the care of patient on protective status
Assessments by LPNs are to be signed by a KVC RN
Reviews immunization records
Reports infectious disease to infection control nurse
Supervises the monitoring of 15-minute checks on all patients
Assists in staff training/education
Monitors and assists in staff/patient activities
Leads and co-leads therapeutic milieu groups
Notifies pharmacy of patient medication orders
Respects and supports patient rights
Promotes and practices customer and peer relations
Performs other related duties as required
Assists in setting up appointment for outside referral, consults, ie.gynecology, psychological testing, dental, etc.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Directly supervises nursing staff in the Psychiatric Hospital.
Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organizations policies and applicable laws.
Responsibilities may include but not be limited to planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; addressing complaints and resolving problems.
