The Robert J. Dole VA Medical Center, Wichita, KS has an opening for a full time medical support assistant in Behavioral Health Service.  

 

Salary range:  GS 3: $24,933 - $32,412/annum

  GS 4: $27,990 - $36,384/annum

 GS 5: $31,315 - $40,706/annum


Note:  The full performance level of this vacancy is GS 5.  The actual grade at which an applicant may be selected for this vacancy is in the range of GS 3 to GS 5.  The Professional Standards Board (a peer-review group) will review the selected candidate’s education and experience and recommend the grade and step at which the candidate will be placed.  The salary is based on the grade and step approved for the selected candidate.
Tour of Duty:  Varies and includes nights and weekends.

FLSA Status:  non-exempt

Duties include but are not limited to: providing administrative support for Behavioral Health Service which consists of the Mental Health Clinic, Ancillary Services, Recovery Services, Therapy Services and Operations.  The incumbent is responsible to the Operations Manager and/or Associate Chief of Staff, Behavioral Health for providing advisory and technical assistance to veterans and beneficiaries who come to the service seeking mental health care, experiencing problems or requesting information.  Obtains, enters and monitors the electronic activity regarding insurance and income information, advises staff in a variety of matters concerning veterans insurance coverage for billing purposes, schedules appointments and consults and takes telephone calls.

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE:  Knowledge of medical terminology, experience in working in a healthcare setting with receptionist duties. 

BASIC REQUIREMENTS:  

Citizenship. Citizenof the United States. (Non-citizens may be appointed when it is not possible torecruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Handbook 5005, part II,chapter 3, section A, paragraph 3g.)

Experience and Education

(1) Experience. Sixmonths experience of clerical, office or other work that indicates the abilityto acquire the particular knowledge and skills needed to perform the duties ofthe position; or

(2) Education. One yearabove high school; or

(3) Experience/EducationCombination. Equivalent combination of experience and education arequalifying for entry level for which both education and experience areacceptable.

Certification. Nonerequired.

English LanguageProficiency. MSAs must be proficient in spoken and written English inaccordance with VA Handbook 5005, part II, chapter 3, section A, paragraph 3j.

GRADE REQUIREMENTS:

(1) GS-3 MSA (Entry Level)

(a) Experience or Education.None beyond the basic requirements.

(b) Assignment. This isan entry level MSA position. It is expected that MSAs receive guidance frommore experienced staff members and require frequent and direct supervision.

(2) GS-4 MSA (DevelopmentalLevel)

(a) Experience or Education.One year of experience in clerical or office work that indicates theability to acquire the particular knowledge and skills needed to perform theduties of the position or two years of education above high school.

(b) Assignment. This isa developmental level MSA position.

(c) Demonstrated Knowledge,Skills, and Abilities. Candidates must demonstrate the KSAs below:

1. Ability to meet, communicateand interact with individuals from varying backgrounds and other health careteam members in a courteous and helpful manner in order to complete jobassignments.

2. Ability to use various typesof office automation equipment and software.

3. Ability to set up, organize,and maintain record systems.

(3) GS-5 MSA (FullPerformance Level)

(a) Experience or Education.One year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade level or 4 yearsof education above high school.

(b) Assignment. This isthe full performance level for MSAs. At this level, the MSA performs a fullrange of duties. The MSA is responsible for scheduling appointments, includinginterpreting and verifying provider orders in accordance with VHA nationalscheduling guidelines. Assignments at this level include, but are not limitedto: scheduling, canceling, re-scheduling patient’s appointments and/orconsults; entering no-show information; monitoring the electronic wait list;preparing for clinic visits; monitoring both inpatient and outpatientappointments for areas of responsibility; ensuring encounter forms arecompleted in order to obtain appropriate workload credit; verifying andupdating demographics and insurance information; processing all emergency and non-emergencytransfers to other VA facilities or private hospitals; performing basiceligibility, co-pays and preauthorization requirements for specific coverage(i.e., TRICARE, sharing agreements, etc.).

(c) Demonstrated Knowledge,Skills, and Abilities. Candidates must demonstrate the KSAs below:

1. Ability to operatecomputerized programs and databases in order to enter, modify and retrievesensitive information/data into or from electronic medical records, schedulingsystems and/or reports.

2. Knowledge of basic medicalterminology.

3. Ability to make appointmentsin a clinical setting.

4. Ability to workindependently in the accomplishment of a wide variety of duties, includingsetting priorities and coordinating work.

5. Ability to communicate effectivelyand professionally with employees at varying grade levels.

6.Ability to identify customer’s concerns, perform the tasks required to resolvethe issue accurately and timely, and follow-up as necessary to ensure asatisfactory resolution.
