Job Description
The City of Olathe Planning Division seeks a Senior Planner to supervise and oversee certain activities and operations of the City Planning Division.Professional level planning work in conducting independent studies, completing planning projects, and regulating the growth and development of the City in accordance with the Comprehensive Plan and other statutes, ordinances, and regulations related to land use and community development. Senior Planner positions require analytical thinking and problem-solving, team-oriented participation, excellent human relations, interpersonal and written/verbal communication skills, good public presentation and customer service skills.Candidates must have knowledge of Word, Office, and Excel. PowerPoint, GIS, Photoshop, InDesign and Publisher experience is preferred.Senior Planners compile, analyze, and interpret data related to the more complex social, economic, population, and land use trends; prepares written reports on the most complex planning matters and elements of the General Plan; and provide lead direction and training to subordinate planners.
Key Responsibilities:
- Coach/Lead, motivate, develop, and evaluate assigned personnel.
- Manage implementation of the Comprehensive Plan.
- Manage complex planning studies, development applications and reviews consultant proposals.
- Review and process complex comprehensive plan amendments, rezonings, annexations, site plans, plats.
- Oversees development applications and reviews development for compliance with the citys Unified Development Ordinance and Comprehensive Plan.
- Prepares technical reports on development proposals, presents to the Planning Commission and City Council on a regular basis.
- Assist Planning Manager with aspects of Division management.
- Provide critical public information on all aspects of planning activities.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Job Requirements
Experience & Education:A Bachelors degree in Urban Planning or a related field, and at least three (3) years progressively responsible planning experience. A Mastersdegree ispreferred.Certified Professional Plannerthrough theAmerican Institute of Certified Planners (AICP).
Knowledge of the following:
- Advanced knowledge of the philosophies, principals, practices & techniques of planning.
- Knowledge and experience in construction processes.
- Knowledge of principles, methodology, practices or research and data collection.
- Knowledge of effective writing techniques.
- Knowledge of computer hardware and software programs, which may include Microsoft Office, Internet applications and GIS.
Supplemental Information:
Hours: Monday - Friday; 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.
