The City of Shawnee, Kansas is accepting applications for a Community Services Officer - Codes Enforcement Specialist.

This position is responsible for insuring compliance and enforcement of applicable codes and ordinances of the City enforced by the Police Department. This includes ordinances covering the parking and storing of motor vehicles, trailers, recreational vehicles, and motor homes on private property, commercial property, and roadways. In addition, this position is responsible for assisting the Property Control Community Service Officer with functional, clerical, and administrative duties in the Police Department Property Room. This position may also take minor crime reports and assist with departmental projects and assignments. This position involves field and office work and requires problem solving ability, customer service skills, writing skills, and ability to work with co-workers and the public. This position is subject to call in 24 hours a day, seven days a week to assist in emergency situations.
POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES
- Complaint Resolution and Report Preparation: Responds to complaints and takes appropriate action to correct problems related to codes enforcement. Writes reports related to calls and complaints and follows up for inspection.
- Investigations, Enforcement and Patrol: Responds to, investigates, and reports municipal ordinance violations. Enforces ordinances for parking and storing motor vehicles, recreational vehicles, trailers, and motor homes on private and commercial property. Patrols in vehicle to enforce City laws and ordinances.
- Other: Testifies in Municipal Court as required. Takes walk-in offense reports. Maintains vehicles and other department equipment.
Job Requirements
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS- High school diploma or the equivalent.
- Previous experience working with the public and previous experience in law enforcement or codes enforcement.
- Must be dependable and reliable and able to render credible court testimony.
- Must possess a valid driver’s license with a good driving record.
- Must carry a City-provided wireless communication device (i.e. smart phone).
- Successful completion of Police Department background investigation including a polygraph, psychological job fit assessment, management readiness exercise, and job shadow and ride-along with current Community Services Officers, successful completion of post-offer physical and drug screen.
