Structural Engineer at Wichita

Job Description

POSITION PURPOSE:


The Structural Engineer is responsible for the structural design of small projects and coordinates and reviews work by others on larger projects. 

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND BASIC DUTIES:

 

1. Review industrial steel installations including stacks, structures, piping, and tanks.

 

2. Determine the modifications required to meet needed conditions and design industrial building modifications required.

 

3. Evaluate steel designer submittal drawings and steel fabricator submittal drawings for compliance with design expectations, and release them as appropriate.

 

4. Inspect the progress and as-built compliance of building construction activities in relation to the design expectations.

 

5. Determine the most effective design and/or solution to problems including consideration for process requirements, economic evaluation, schedule, operator effectiveness, fire ratings, insurance company requirements, means of egress, and physical & health hazards.

 

6. Set accountability for workflow and delegation of tasks relating to structural workload.

 

7. Proactively interface with ICM project management, process engineering, electrical engineering, manufacturing, and design services personnel in defining project scope.

 

8. Manage scope, schedule, and progress of structural workload.

 

9. Communicate with teams to propose project changes and ascertain the impacts of proposed changes to ICM projects.

 

10. Bridge communication flow between external construction, engineering firms, and ICM departments.

 

11. Prepare various reports including feasibility studies, capacity/load, and market research.


Job Requirements

Education/Certification: 

Bachelor degree required, Structural Engineering or related discipline preferred.

SE (Structural Engineer) license and/or registration in the state of Kansas (or ability to obtain one within 2 months), and be willing to sign off on foundation and steel designs required.

Additional SE/PE registrations preferred.

NCEES registration and record preferred.

 

Required Knowledge & Experience: 

3-5 years’ experience structural design experience required.

7 years related experience and/or training preferred.

Industrial steel and structural experience is required, preferably experience with stacks, tanks, tank foundations and other non-building structures.

Experience in geotechnical engineering preferred.

 

   

Skills/Abilities: 

Possess excellent computer skills utilizing MS Office products, Adobe, and AutoCAD software.

Demonstrates attention to detail.

Possess excellent written, verbal and interpersonal skills.

Ability to work with minimal supervision after initial training period.

Acts with honesty and integrity.

Possess fluent verbal and written skills in the English language.

 

   

PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES AND REQUIREMENTS OF THIS POSITION

Travel as required for project development, construction, and follow-up stages, approximately 5% of the time.  Ability to sit for long periods of time.  Able to view computer screen for lengths at a time.  Must be able to speak and listen clearly.  Fine visual acuity to read for accuracy. May be exposed to loud noises, wet and humid conditions, fumes or airborne particles, toxic chemicals, extreme hot and cold depending on weather conditions.  May be required to work in high, precarious places. 
 

PHYSICAL STRENGTH: 

This job may require lifting of up to 50 pounds occasionally.
