Online Editor (62-13) at Leawood

Job Description

News Department online editors research, write and edit news, feature and analysis/interpretation articles about family medicine and family physicians; the AAFPs policies, products and events; and the larger world of medicine for the Academys official news publication, AAFP News Now, which is posted online and delivered via e-mail. Online editors cultivate strong working relationships with news sources both inside and outside the Academy; travel on assignment; shoot photographs to accompany articles; record audio and video to accompany articles; and collaborate with graphic designers to develop concepts to illustrate and augment content and enhance the visual appeal of articles. They track trends in medicine, the overall health care industry and the larger world and forecast/interpret what these trends will mean for family physicians and physicians-in-training, the AAFP, and our news enterprise. They also consult on the member communications needs of other AAFP divisions and provide direct editorial services as indicated. Approximately 15-20 days travel annually.

Job Requirements


This position requires a bachelors degree in Journalism or a closely related Communications field, plus at least four years of news-editorial experience, including writing news, feature and analysis/interpretation articles; editing; photojournalism; proofreading; and publications production. A health care reporting background is essential; prior experience covering clinical and health research topics is strongly preferred; and previous experience working with nonprofit, membership and/or business-to-business organizations is highly valued. Candidates must have a working knowledge of the overall health care system, physician issues, libel law and online publishing processes. Required skills include news, feature and interpretation/analysis writing; clinical/technical writing and editing for a professional audience; proofreading; digital photography; video and audio recording; research skills (medical literature, Internet); and basic statistical skills (to interpret study data). Candidates must be proficient with the PC computer platform and Microsoft Word, must be familiar with PowerPoint and Excel, and must have the ability to rapidly learn to use new software and related technologies. Excellent interpersonal communication skills and strong organizational skills are required. Candidates must be able to meet multiple deadlines, adapt to shifting priorities and work in a strongly team-oriented environment while still being able to perform tasks independently, especially when on assignment away from AAFP headquarters.
