About the Position:
This position involves the treatment of patients with musculoskeletal injury/pain and functional limitations. The Physical Therapy Clinic is a busy clinic providing physical therapy intervention to help restore patients to full function. Interventions include therapeutic exercise, patient education, manual therapy, modalities (ice, heat, electrical stimulation, ultrasound, traction, etc). Additionally, the clinic directs the rehabilitation for orthopedic surgical patients.

DUTIES:Back to top As a physical therapy assistant, you will provide direct physical therapy treatment to a diverse patient population, including ambulatory and non-ambulatory patients. Interpret physicians orders and provide the initial assessment necessary to independently initiate care. Determine the treatment objectives and necessary precautions to be observed during the treatment period. Design and modify treatment programs requiring a multifaceted approach determined by the patients physical and mental conditions, using both standard and nonstandard treatment procedures. Operate equipment and design exercise programs in accordance with standard Physical Therapy practices. Administer physical therapy to walk-in ambulatory, general medical and surgical patients which involves the use of heat, cold, water, electricity, massage, and therapeutic exercise to treat physical disabilities, injuries and disease. Based on observation of patient response, judge whether or not the treatment program is having the desires effect. Modify or discontinues treatment programs as needed, annotating patients progress in medical records. Perform modalities such as ultrasound, diathermy, Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation, cervical and lumbar traction, hycrocollator packs, cryotherapy, paraffin therapy, jobst stockings and pump, iontophoresis. Perform crutch and cane ambulation, gait instruction, respiratory rehabilitation, amputee care, proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation, isometrics, and various progressive resistive exercise programs. QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:Back to top Specialized Experience: One year of experience in the same or similar work equivalent to at least the next lower level (GS-05) requiring application of the knowledge, skills, and abilities of the position being filled. Candidates for this position must clearly demonstrate in their resume that they possess specialized experience which involves assisting a physical therapist in carrying out individual treatment plans, documenting changes in patients condition and utilizing physical therapy modalities including therapeutic exercise.  You will be evaluated on the basis of your level of competency (knowledge, skills, abilities) in the following areas: 

•  Ability to design a physical therapy rehabilitation program
• Ability to operate physical therapy equipment and materials
• Skill in interpersonal communication
 

Education Substitution for Specialized Experience:  One (1) full year of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree from an accredited college or university that is directly related to the work of the position. You must upload transcripts with your application package. Combination of Education and Experience: If you have some but not all of the experience or education described above, you may still qualify by combining the amount of creditable experience and education that you do have. To do so, compute the percentage of your requirements met, the sum of which must equal at least 100%. (To compute the percentage, divide your total months of qualifying experience by 12. Then divide your semester hours of graduated education by 18. Add the two percentages.)  Only degrees from an accredited college or university recognized by the Department of Education are acceptable to meet positive education requirements or to substitute education for experience.
